What to Expect During Sports Physicals

What to Expect During Sports Physicals

In order to play certain sports, particularly for school, your little one may need a sports physical. Our pediatricians at Longwood Pediatrics, serving Lake Mary, Longwood, Altamonte Springs, Sanford, Maitland, FL, and the surrounding regions, offer this service. But, before you schedule an appointment for one, you may wonder what sports physicals consist of.

General Information

During sports physicals at our office, our pediatricians determine if it's safe for your child to play the sport he or she desires.

Medical History Report

At a sports physical, the practitioner looks at your child's medical history. The doctor will ask you to fill out a questionnaire that asks about any medical conditions your child has and what runs in his or her family. The form will ask about any surgeries or hospitalizations your kid previously had. The questions will also be about any injuries your child had in the past and if your child has any allergies.

Part of the questionnaire will also ask you about any medications your child takes. This includes any over-the-counter drugs or supplements in addition to prescriptions.

You'll also be asked if your son has any testicular pain and about your daughter's menstrual cycle. The practitioner will also want to know if your kid smokes, vapes, or uses any drugs or alcohol.

Physical Examination

When your child visits our practice for a sports physical, he or she will also receive a physical exam. This includes measuring his or her height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, and heart and lung function. Your kid will receive a vision examination and an assessment of his or her muscles, joints, and bones.

Discussing Any Concerns

While you hope your kid can play the sport he or she wants, and that's usually how it goes, sometimes there are issues that prevent your child from playing a sport. In this case, your kid may have to sit out this season or play under strict regulations. The practitioner may recommend other sports he or she can play safely instead.

On the other hand, a doctor from our practice may prescribe medication or adjust your child's current treatment, recommend physical therapy, or conduct further testing before signing the form.

Our pediatricians at Longwood Pediatrics recommend sports physicals for all kids playing sports. They can complete the sports physicals whether it's a requirement or your preference. They serve Lake Mary, Longwood, Altamonte Springs, Sanford, Maitland, FL, and the general vicinities.
