What is ADHD?

All children have trouble staying on task at times, so how do you know when it's something more? Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD makes it difficult for your child to focus on tasks and activities. There are three main symptoms of ADHD; Hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattentiveness. However, your child does not need to display all three symptoms in order to have ADHD. Each child is different but these are the most common symptoms of ADHD:

  • Trouble staying focused and paying attention
  • Hyperactive
  • Impulsive
  • Easily distracted
  • Forgetful
  • Disorganized
  • Difficulty sitting still
  • Makes careless mistakes
  • Starts tasks and doesn't finish them
  • Disrupts classroom activities

If your child exhibits several or all of these symptoms, come see us in Longwood, FL. There is no cure for ADHD but symptoms can be managed with a combination of medication and cognitive-behavioral therapy.

ADHD Treatment

Left untreated, ADHD interferes with school performance and social interactions and will affect your child's entire life. If you think your child is suffering from ADHD the first step is to come in for a screening test. A screening test for ADHD is more like a thorough interview with the child, and sometimes a parent or caregiver if the child is very young. If your child is found to have ADHD, the recommendation may be a combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy and medication.

ADHD medication works by improving neurotransmission which can help you focus. Therapy helps your child learn healthy habits and helpful coping mechanisms. ADHD often occurs with other conditions like anxiety and depression that also benefit from therapy. Learning to manage symptoms of ADHD goes a long way in improving your child's success in their school and social life.
